August 1, Fineko/abc.az. Chinese AI startup Moonshot has secured a computing power agreement leveraging approximately 20,000 Nvidia chips through Alibaba to train its artificial intelligence models.
Utilizing this infrastructure, Moonshot developed its open-source AI model, Kimi K3, which demonstrates performance rivaling flagship models from industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. Notably, Kimi K3 outperformed Alibaba's in-house "Qwen" model across key benchmarks, generating internal friction despite Alibaba being a major investor.
The achievement has reignited debates in Washington regarding the efficacy of US tech sanctions. Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, openly criticized the company, alleging that Moonshot illegally obtained access to Nvidia's advanced Blackwell chips.
