August 5, Fineko/abc.az. AI giant Anthropic has confirmed the formation of an internal silicon engineering team to design custom AI chips, aimed at optimizing the performance of its Claude models and mitigating global hardware supply constraints.
The newly formed team will co-design custom hardware tailored to run Claude models with higher speed and energy efficiency at scale. Anthropic clarified that the custom silicon initiative is part of a broader diversified hardware strategy, meaning the company will continue to rely on cloud and hardware solutions from partners including AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD.
According to industry estimates, designing an advanced AI chip from scratch can cost up to $500 million. Anthropic has not yet disclosed a timeline or manufacturing partner for the rollout of its in-house processors.
